Several great things about these batteries. Firstly, they are backwards compatible. So as long as you have a 14.4v or 18v li-ion “slide-in battery” style cordless tool you only have to pay for the batteries themselves, and we all like to save a bit of cash!

Secondly, and more obviously, these batteries are both a time- and money-saver. They give 33% extra run-time, which of course gives increased mobility and freedom as well as less down-time messing around with batteries and chargers. On top of giving extra daily runtime, they also have a longer lifetime as they require less frequent charging. Lithium-ion cells can only cope with 1,000 to 1,500 charges before they need replacing, so if you can squeeze even an extra 10 minutes of work out of each charge, that’s a significant saving.

Cordless power tool research and development has advanced rapidly in recent years, the key objectives having been more power, longer runtime and faster charging. As a result, battery voltages have reached 36v, Metabo have recently announced the release of their world-first 4.0Ah batteries, and charging times can now be as low as 30 minutes. This progress has largely been achieved through the development of improved technology. Key developments include the introduction of Lithium Ion to supersede older battery systems and advances in electronics, which have resulted in the reduced charging times as well as significantly increased motor power. At the same time, these advances in technology have improved the overall performance and durability of cordless power tools, especially at the premium end of the market.

As a result, when manufacturers looked to extend their range of cordless tools beyond simply drills, it made sense to develop the 18.0v platform as their flagship range and offer additional tools or kits compatible with this system. I received the Big Bear boots today and am delighted with them.  I pinched a sole liner out of another pair of hubby’s footwear and popped inside and it is looking promising that Cinderella will go to the ball.
