Multi-cutters are great for performing a wide range of tasks, including sanding, grinding, polishing, sawing, cutting and scraping material. These oscillating tools have a head on which an accessory is attached. This is then moved rapidly from side to side by tiny fractions to create small motions. See the illustration on the right for an example of this.
Multi-tools have fine cutting capabilities which makes them perfect for more delicate woodworking tasks that larger machines are unable to perform. Their small body combined with an offset blade also allows easy flush-cutting, which is handy for applications like cutting complex recesses for plug sockets, fitting flooring along skirting boards and cutting tiny slivers of material.
The main benefit of multi-tools is the extensive range of tasks that they are able to conduct; from easily and quickly removing grouting from tiles, to sawing and sanding small sections of awkwardly-placed wood. There is also a vast selection of compatible accessories for these machines, including blades for sawing and plunge-cutting, and sanding and scraping accessories.
Multi-cutters are lightweight, compact and have a very comfortable grip diameter; which greatly improves user comfort, even over long periods of use. Their small size also provides easy access when working in awkward and/or confined spaces, e.g. when sanding with a triangular pad, the tool can fit right into tight corners for a perfect finish.
Cordless multi-tools are highly portable and allow you to work freely without having to rely on access to electricity, which is ideal for when power sources are not available. There is also no safety risk of trailing cables getting in the way of movement. Due to vast improvements in cordless technology over recent years, cordless multi-cutters are now starting to match the power of their mains-powered alternatives.
