An electric planer can come in many sizes, from small ones for light use on small areas to large, heavy duty ones from woodworking specialists like Festool. They are used to smooth rough and uneven wood surfaces by shaving off the high, bumpy sections of wood until they are at the same level as the lowest sections. They are also used to reduce the thickness of wood in small areas, for example when a door is slightly too wide for its frame. These tools are best suited to use on relatively small areas where only medium precision is required, as planer and planer-thicknesser machines are better for large batches of large work pieces where extreme precision is needed.

Power planers feature a knob which is used to adjust the depth of cut and also as a grip, and a blade which spins around in the centre of the tool to slice off the high sections of wood.
