Random orbit sanders combine the smooth finish given by an orbital sander, often leaving an even finer finish, with the rapid stock removal of a belt sander. They use a circular sanding disc that not only “orbits” in the way that an orbital sander does, but also spins at the same time. This means that the grit travels random paths rather than repeating the same pattern and leaving the swirl marks commonly associated with orbital sanders. The result is a sander that is not sensitive to the grain of the wood, leaves scratch-free surface, and wears sanding sheets down evenly which helps them to last longer.
