“SDS” stands for “special direct system”, although the name originally comes from the German “steck, dreh, sitzt” (insert, twist, fits) and stands for “Spannen Durch System” ("Clamping System") there in the present day, and it describes the drill bit clamping mechanism in these drills. The specially designed drill bit can be changed without the use of tools simply by pressing the chuck back and opening the clamping mechanism. The bit’s grooved shank allows it to move freely, held in securely by 2 ball bearings, thereby enabling the hammer action. This hammer action is not only more powerful but also results in less wear on the chuck, and when the rotary action is switched off the hammer action enables the SDS Plus drill to be used as a chisel.
