A bench thicknesser is a bench-top tool used for trimming large amounts of large pieces of wood to an identical thickness. The cutting height is set using the scale on the side of the machine, and the workpiece fed into the hole where the blades inside the machine trim off the excess material. This is repeated as many times as necessary until the final pass leaves a piece of wood that is exactly the same depth along its length. This precise setting of height using a millimetre scale is what enables this machine to produce the precise, consistent results that it does. It is ideal for use in applications such as trimming floorboards to the same exact height.

A planer thicknesser combies this machine with a planer, which is used to smooth rough and bumpy surfaces. As the wood is passed over the top of the cutting blade the resulting thickness is less accurate but it does provide more flexibility for wider work pieces which require less precision.
