• Random orbital sanders: Move rapidly in an elliptical orbit whilst spinning around a spindle at the same time to create random paths. They leave a finer finish without the swirl marks that are commonly associated with orbital sanders.
• Orbital sanders: Move rapidly in a very narrow elliptical orbit. They provide a good balance between rapid material removal and a clean finish.
• Palm sanders: A smaller version of an orbital sander that's ideal for smaller tasks or better access in tight or awkward spaces.
• Delta sanders: A smaller version of an orbital sander with a triangle shape and a pointed tip for better access in tight or awkward spaces.

• Belt sanders: Have a rotating sanding belt which provides very high material removal but leaves a rough finish. They're ideal for the initial stages of surface processing.
• Sander polishers and burnishers: Sanders for non-wooden surfaces like metal and stone.
