Biscuit Jointers

A Biscuit JointWhat is a Biscuit Jointer and how does it work?

A small TCT circular saw blade cuts a crescent shaped hole (the "mouth") in the wood, one each edge you wish to join together. An oval-shaped, highly-dried and compressed wooden biscuit (usually beech) is covered with glue, or glue is applied in the slot, and the biscuit is immediately placed in the slot.

The two boards are then clamped together and the wet glue expands the biscuit, further improving the bond. The image to the right shows a biscuit resting in one of the materials to be joined

What is a Festool domino joiner?

Festool manufacture their own, slightly different biscuit jointer called the Festool Domino, which uses a rotary blade. The blade cuts a domino shaped mortise which provides a surface area larger than typical biscuit slots for greater bond strength. The cutter is capable of accommodating a variety of domino sizes.
