SDS-Plus rotary hammer drills are the more powerful big brother of standard impact drills, making them ideal for the heavy-duty drilling of holes between 3.0mm and 30.0mm diameter in concrete, brick and masonry.
Instead of a simple ratcheting mechanism, these drills are powered by a pneumatic hammer that physically strikes the back of the drill bit to hammer it into the material. SDS-Plus drills provide more power with much less user effort, and are more durable.
The rotation stop feature available on most models means that they are also suitable for light chiselling applications when used with an SDS Plus chisel attachment. Many of these machines also feature an impact stop to allow them to be used to drill holes in wood and metal.
SDS stands for 'Special Direct System' and describes the bit clamping system in these machines. SDS-Plus is the most common form of this system.
The shanks of the 10mm drill bits used with these power tools have 2 open grooves that are held by driving wedges, and 2 closed grooves held by locking balls. This design allows the drill bit to simply slip in and lock, with no tightening needed, and it can be released just as easily, which greatly improves efficiency.
The design also allows the bit to move backwards and forwards freely, meaning that the chuck does not need to be moved as much and the drill can therefore provide more power with less effort from the user.
Choosing which SDS-Plus rotary hammer drill you need can be difficult, especially when there can be very little difference between them. Here are some of the things you can consider when you are choosing between SDS drills:-
We stock a wide range of SDS-Plus accessories, including drill bits and chisels.
We also supply a great range of cordless SDS-Plus drills which might be better suited to your needs.
